About Bluegrass Underwater Explorers

Bluegrass Underwater Explorers is a Kentucky-based group dedicated to maximizing scuba diving fun and safety through comprehensive education and frequent practice. BGUE individuals dive the DIR (Doing It Right) philosophy and have been trained by GUE (Global Underwater Explorers). BGUE is also open to those who want to learn about the DIR philosophy and who might want to pursue training with GUE. Bottom line is that we work hard to achieve the highest level of precision and skill in diving, and we have a great time doing it. If you are interested and want to give it a try, we welcome anyone to come and dive with us, no matter if you are brand-new to scuba or if you pre-date Jacques Cousteau and have 1000+ dives in your log book. Membership is free (in terms of money); you simply contribute your ideas and camaraderie to the team.

Throughout the year, we meet once a month at the New Horizons Diving Center in Lexington, Kentucky. Meetings usually consist of fun/social time, discussions of interest to our diving, and a two hour skill practice session at the University of Kentucky Lancaster Aquatic Center.

During the local diving season (June – September), any number of us can be found exploring quarries and lakes in our area just about every weekend. Also, based on specific interests (reefs, wrecks, caves, etc.), we venture off to great scuba destinations throughout the year.

GUE Mission Statement

Global Underwater Explorers emerged out of a shared desire to safely explore and protect the underwater world and to improve the quality of education and research in all things aquatic. In line with the original vision of its founding members, GUE is committed to:

- Developing safe, skilled, and knowledgeable divers
- Undertaking and promoting underwater research
- Pursuing global underwater exploration
- Safeguarding the integrity of the underwater world
- Providing the public with a comprehensive resource on all things aquatic.

Working to redefine the ties binding the average underwater enthusiast to underwater explorers, conservationists and scientific researchers GUE is committed to the overall goal of promoting the interests of the underwater world and of those who seek to engage it.

DIR Philosophy

The DIR (Doing It Right) philosophy was developed by explorers who realized the need for a method of diving that would provide the highest level of safety and efficiency for their team as they pushed further and further into aquatic areas where no one had been before. By using standardized equipment, training, and skills practice, they created a holistic system that is universal in application. Whether relaxing and fish-watching on a Caribbean reef at 30 feet, or exploring a World War II wreck at 400 feet in challenging conditions, the DIR system benefits any diver who is committed to its training, practice, and use.
